Quick Tip: Pedestrians

Hey all,

Peace be upon you.

After being in the States for 3 months now, I think its important to know how to walk on the streets. This is because you can actually get fined for what they call "jaywalking". Jaywalking is "an informal term used to refer to illegal or reckless pedestrian crossing of a roadway" (Wikipedia). Kalau kat Malaysia main selamba je lintas jalan. Kalau kena langgar kreta pun tak salah. Tapi kalau kat sini kena saman oh.

You will see crossing signs here in the U.S. and most major cities or towns have instructions on how you should cross the road.

If you get tired of walking, get a taxi. It's best if you saved the cab number in your mobile phone before you set foot around town. If you're lucky, you may get to use this thing:

So yeah, just the basic stuff. For those of you who drink alcohol, drinking in public is a state offense and you have to be 21 years or older (not 18 like in Msia) to drink.

Stay safe!

Wasalam,

Hariz

Dear all,

Upon you be peace.

Sometimes you'll come to a point where you have to decide whether you should travel solo or with friends across the U.S. during breaks. This time i've decided to go alone and here's what i found out.

This is one of the great advantages of travelling alone...

... you get to keep all the ladies to yourself.

Climate Change: The Transition from Winter to Spring

Dear all,

Peace be upon you.

The weather has been playing tricks lately. Kejap suam, kejap sejuk. Sometimes it rains, sometimes it snows. Sometimes it's cloudy, sometimes it's sunny. No wonder Americans often talk about the weather, it changes everyday! Kalau kat malaysia senang je, hujan n panas. Not much to talk about.

I'm sure u've checked out my previous post on surviving the snow. It hasn't been snowing here in Bloomington lately and it's getting warmer each day, so I won't be needing these anymore:

Too bad this isn't the case for Kalamazoo, they just had a snowstorm a few days back when my friends from WMU came to visit IU.

The last time it snowed heavily at IU was this much:

It's a good thing I realized that I had snow on my cap before I got into that computer class. The snow could have fallen on to the computer n mess evrythin up.

So how do can you tell if spring is coming? Well, you can't count on the Groundhog coz it got runover by a truck.

Yeah, i know it's sad but hey, that's life.

Never trust the squirrels. The squirrels are bloody fat and they stay awake during the winter.

They are evil i tell you! One of them almost clawed me! crazy rats...

The best way to tell if spring is near is by looking at the good ol' harmless plants. New buds and seeds appear at the tip of the branches where the leaves used to be. Here are some snapshots that I took to give u a clearer picture:

The waters of creeks flow much faster because of melting ice. Also an indicator of spring.

But to me, the worse sign of spring of all is this:

ARGHH!!! BUGGGSSSS!!!!

But these bugs are not too bad. These are lady bugs. Can't really zoom upclose coz they're too small. Some say they're cute, but I say they're pests. Although they don't bite, they tend to fly around the room, hit a light bulb a couple of times and die. And at the end of the day, I'll be the one who has to host the funeral. Down the toilet you go!

Spiders have started to show up too. I don't mind spiders. They eat other bugs. But the most creepiest bug of all that I have seen in my apartment is the SILVERFISH!!!

In malaysia, they are about a few milimetres long. Here, they're about a half an inch long. And they move REALLY FAST!

They have this evil look on their faces. Oh how i hate them. I learnt that they eat books, clothes and glue. They also eat thru cereal boxes and lay their eggs in cereal. So kids, if I were you, I would keep my coco crunch in tupperware. I tend to pick up my clothes from the floor nowadays too. Evil....

These are just little indicators that spring is near. You might see flowers start blooming too. Like this one I saw today which appeared out of nowhere:

So why should you be on a look out for spring? Yes, you can just check the calendar but where's the fun in that? And remember earlier I said that kejap suam, kejap sejuk? The fluctuations in surrounding temperature and humidity is hazardous to the human body. Why? Because when spring is coming, it's not just plants, animals and insects that come out to play. Viruses and bacteria too become active. This is something vital that you should know about and should prepare yourself when you encounter this period of time.

The transition from winter to spring is also known as The Flu Season!

So far alhamdulillah, I havent gotten sick yet. Though my sinuses do react at times. What I do is drink plenty of plain water to rehydrate myself from the dryness and eat Vitamin C and other supplements in the mornings.

Also, do stock up on over the counter medicine. Even when you feel slightly feverish, don't take chances. Drink lots n lots of water. Here are some that I got for myself:

Exercise helps boost your metabolism. Since the weather's not too cold out, jogging is not such a bad idea.

The best thing to do is get a flu shot. It is the best preventive measure of getting a flu. Flu shots last to about a year. You don't wanna miss class because of a flu. Even if you insist going to class when you're sick, I strongly advise against it because you don't want to give other people what you got!

What's worse is that when it is really-truly spring, there's a high chance you can get hay-fever. So just prepare yourself for the worse and take precautions.

But do enjoy the nice n cool weather, I'm glad that I can go out with just a t-shirt on nowadays.

Wasalam.
I love u baby sayang... you are the flower in my spring :)
